I connect to wi fi and always switch off when I'm not using

Yep, the above two suggestions are the best free alternatives.

Give both a try see which you like. I too use Kerio.

I just meant that I never leave my computer running whilst I'm not using it (overnight etc.)

If you have a wifi router (hope it's encrypted!), then it will give you inbound protection, but good to turn PC's and routers off anyway when you aren't using them.

Comodo gets my vote too.

I have my parents and in - laws set up on this and both are not tech savvy and have no problems what so ever.
