Double Glazing Units-Correct Thickness

I've been quoted for the replacement of some single glazed porch windows with double glazed units. The spec given is 18mm double glazed argon-filled units.
Is this an acceptable thickness?-I've no idea what the standards are for double glazing.

4-10-4 argon filled low E soft coat (planitherm) will give you a U value of 1.5 which is ok.I'm not sure you need to comply fully with Part L of the regs, just toughend where necessary as the porch is an addition to the house..

4-12-4 argon filled planitherm will give a U value of 1.3 so it depends on the type of glass, space between and the type of gas they are filled with. Krypton is better than Argon and Xenon even better.

Do you know what type of glass they have quoted for??? Pilkington K, Planitherm?

If you were replacing the windows on your house you need to get the U value down to below 1.6 to comply...

It's just 3 small fixed panes over a porch-not an opening window or a complete house install.

  • Then 18mm thick units are fine.........

As stated above me its only a porch so doesn't have to meet house specs.

Regarding thickness it occurs to me that 18mm might be the thickest DG unit that the existing frame will take.

    Cheers
