Is it possible to be OS and feminine?

Every morning I fall out of bed, throw on jeans and a jumper, scrape back my hair into a pony tail and get on with the chores. My sleeves ends get soggy, flour gets on my face, my socks have holes worn through them - I never bother wearing make up and as for shaving my legs sheesh! I'd put a werewolf to shame....the thing is pre-kids I was always immaculate, make-up, hair, nails - the lot. Now I only get dressed up "nicely" (and shave my legs lol) if i'm going out somewhere special. My DH says he prefers the "real me" but I do miss being a girly girl
The old wartime magazines always said "Beauty is a duty!" and women then were working in ammunition factories and being land girls - does anyone manage to still look yummy and be OS?

Of course it is
Some people find different clothes comfortable to throw on in the morning, it might be jeans or it might be a dress.
OS/DIY face and hair treatments? Painting my nails with mud all over my face and oil on my hair is one of my favourite ways to relax. It doesn't look pretty at the time but it'll make you feel better.
Are you short on time or can you just not be bothered to faff around with a bic and lippy? It's understandable, I get really slobby at times when I just don't care!Living cheap in central London :rotfl:0 -
I think it's possible. I'm not terribly great at putting on proper makeup and doing my hair but I'll always try to put on some eye make up. I also tend to wear short skirts with tights rather than jeans every day no matter what I'm doing (apart from gardening).
Edit: this is not to say I don't also tend to look a state quite frequently but I think breaking away from jeans helps a lot in the looking more dressed up.0 -

It's not that i'm short on time - I waste hours on the internet- I suppose i've got into the mind set of thinking "What's the point?" when all i'm doing is hoovering or baking. If I put my make up on my kids always say "Why are you dressed up?" I try explaining that actually lots of mums wear make up everyday and they just look at me sceptically lol.
As an experiment about 6 years ago I wore skirts everyday for 3 months and I did actually feel more feminine and got comments on how nice I looked from other mums on the school run but I somehow slipped back into the jeans routine again!
I do feel more glam dressed up but I must admit that now it's been so long since it was a daily routine that I find it a chore - especially having to wash it all off again before bed. I probably just need a good kick up the backside lol :eek:0 -
I'm really struggling snce we moved house in autumn. I always find winter hard as I am in and out with animals....and get muddy at least twice more like 5 ties a day.
My saviour this summer, and now into winter, is a jersey maxi dress. On the days I'm organised I get the muckiest stuff done indoors and out in the morning then bath and get dressed to do lighter stuff, which is fine in this.
edit: I moved house in summer, not autumn as I typed, so as well as looking a mess my mind is addled!0 -

LOL! you sound like me!
Not so long ago a friend of ours told his wife that I was "een bouwvakker" which litterally means builder/bricklayer.. Not sure how you would translate that.. it's a saying.. like I"m not very feminine anyways.. because I was chopping wood for the fire....
I'm the hands on type of gal.. don't mind helping with heavy chores, painting, redecorating, moving furniture, chopping wood etc... and there's no way I can be all prettied up for doing stuff like that!?
But at times I sort of wish i could be all girlie and nice like..
My husband doesn't care.. he prefers me as I am.. so don't really know why it bothers me sometimes. ;-)0 -
There is nothing wrong with looking anyway you want but if it is getting to you then it is worth doing something about. I used to love unusual clothes and although I wasn't a 'girly girl' I did always did the beauty basics, plus painted toenails, quirky jewelery etc. Now I have much less time and money most of that has gone out of the window and I feel I look very boring most of the time. I don't have time to go second hand rummaging and any 'new' purchases have to be guaranteed to be worn so I can't take risks with something a bit more unusual (and often double up things to wear to the office = double dull!).
It has had an impact on my confidence, but I think there are things I could be doing to change with a bit of motivation and I'm sure you could too. Not many things can't be done in skirts/dresses (particularily with thick tights/leggings & boots) and there is a beauty board on here which I'm sure will have loads of cheap tips for that side of things.
As for 'dressing up' feeling a bit pointless - there is a point to it if it makes you feel good - it doesn't have to be for a reason or for anyone else.0 -
I think it's very easy to embrace the feminine and be OS. In the winter I find it loads warmer to wear a skirt and tights rather than jeans and a nice coloured vest or t-shirt under a jumper looks nice and keeps you warm. I wear my hair down and don't wear makeup most of the time but I do cleanse and moisturise every day and put on some lip balm. To stay looking not too bad when cooking and stuff I wear an apron so no worries about spills (and it's convenient for carrying mobile phone and other stuff about in the pouch).
An epilator is a great investment, yes they're scary and a bit painful at first, but they're great if you don't like spending too much time primping. And in terms of "what's the point" the point need be nothing more than it's something you'd like to do. Putting your hair into a colourful hairband or something takes no more time than that raggedy old bobble and looks nice as well as doing the job. It's not a case of being done up like a dog's dinner just doing something that feels nice.0 -
I manage
I wash and style my hair every day, I can't leave the house without make up (foundation and mascara - hate that pee holes in the snow look with my blonde lashes LOL), OK I do tend to live in jeans but I wear heeled boots as well as my trainers and I try and accessorise. Sure sometimes I get covered in flour but on the whole I still look like me.
Having said all that I have never been a HMB (high maintenance bird), I don't take 3 hours to get ready to go out, I don't like really long manicured nails so perhaps that's why I manage?!I have a gift for enraging people, but if I ever bore you it'll be with a knifeLouise Brooks
