What should I do about my rabbit this winter?

I have a 3 year old dutch bunny who live in a 2 storey hutch (downstairs is the run) and usually in winter I would put him in the garage with our guinea pig. I know rabbits are hardy enough to be outside but I would put their hutches facing so they would be company for each other. Unfortunately our guinea pig died in October and now i'm not sure what to do about the bunny. If I put him inside I'm worried he will be really bored with nothing to look at - currently he spends most of his day downstairs watching the birds and squirrels in the garden, but if he is used to wintering indoors will he freeze outside? He has grown a thicker coat and his bedroom is stuffed with hay, what do you think would be best? I can't have him indoors because he sets off DS1 eczema :(

  • If he has been outside up to now he will be fine, make sure you have a way of covering his hutch at night and if it's raining in and keep his bedroom full of hay.

I have 4 bunnies who are outside all year round and fine, they have a plastic cover that goes on the hutches at night and if it's raining.

How about giving him an extra run outside of his hutch, but still in the garage with some things to entertain him, extra treats hidden in hard to get at places etc.Is there something like the balls you get for dogs with treats inside.? I'm sure if you hunt around on the net at pet stores you will come up with a few ideas. You could also go in and spend as much time as possible with him.I do think that animals in hutches lead such boring lives,it upsets me to think of them living like that day, month and year out.
