Faulty Tv/DVD from Tesco

Hi, I'm posting this on behalf of my elderly parents who don't have access to the internet.
They purchased a Technika tv/dvd combi about 6 weeks ago, I bought it online for them, and the dvd has never worked.
(They actually don't watch dvd's, the grandkids do, thats why they didn't realise it wasnt working for a while)
My dad rang the technical helpline and they said you have to put a disc cleaner through it (????????) to "kick start" it.

(My thoughts are, why the hell do you have to go out and buy a dvd cleaning disc for a brand new tv?)

Anyway, i took them my disc cleaner round, put it through and suprise it still doesnt work.

My parents are concerned that they will keep getting fobbed off, and i want to help them with what to say etc.
They were told they only have 28 days in which to complain, etc, but i'm sure this doesn't apply if the item is faulty.

It's also an 0845 number, which i found the alternative to, but it didn't work, so they are having to ring 0845 each time.

I feel that they should simply arrange a replacement tv, but also feel they will keep trying to "fob" them off as they are elderly.

Help!!!

Try putting the DVD in the other way round... insert with the writing/picture facing away from you.

Most tvs with a dvd player are assembled this way.
    Don't know why.

    Crazy innit?

You bought it. It should be you that deals with the problem. You have the contract with Tesco not your parents. You dealing with it will stop your parents being fobbed off!

    Majorly helpful thanks (not)

I bought it online using their card and their details, i simply acted as a 3rd party.
Anyway, I asked for advice as to where they (we) stand with regards to consumer rights, regardless of " who bought it"....

We tried putting the dvd disc in the other way, and that time it took ages for it to chuck it back out!! Still didnt work.
It seems Tesco have now agreed to replace the product anyway, so no worries.

Technika are their own brand anyway so it really shouldn't be hard for them to sort it out.
  • Well I think it's been made perfectly clear that I shouldn't have come here for advice, as I am now a "muppet".

Such a shame, as I thought these boards were for help and advice, but all I've had is unhelpful crap and abuse.

Thankfully Tesco have agreed to exchange the tv.

This place is not very friendly there are a few people here who like to give people a lot of grief. I'm surprised it's allowed to continue, some forums have had to close in the past because of members like this.

Tell me about it, it's ridiculous!

Someone comes and asks for help, they get an arrrrsy reply, so take offence, then they get stick from someone else!

OP, never mind Takoda, everyone's a muppet where she's concerned.
