But if they hadn't agreed then they would have paid the third party out. So logically it is a battle between two insurance companies or OP's insurance company and the third party as an LIP.
You won't have to pay anything OP, as long as your insurers are fully aware of his claim and you have forwarded to them all his letters and demands for payment of his claim.
Legal cover is a waste of space on comprehensive policies. In my 23 years of motoring I have never taken it, never taken NCB protection either for that matter0 -

I have used it when an uninsured driver ran into the back of me. It was used to successfully sue him for the full cost of not only the repairs but my excess and hire car costs.0 -

But you could just as easily have gone to a local solicitor and pocketed a hefty referral fee for yourself, instead of letting the insurers pocket the referral fee.0 -
