Home Contents Cancellation - Change of Circumstance

Options
I tried to cancel my home insurance policy 1 month after they automatically renewed it due to a change of circumstance - I moved in with my boyfriend. He already had contents insurance.
Am I still liable to pay the amount they're asking for as I cancelled it early? Surely, we couldn't continue the cover if another insurer was already coverin where I moved to.

What are they asking for? Most insurers do make cancellation charges if you cancel mid term, and there may be early redemption fees if you cancel an instalment plan.

Check the policy and see what you are liable for on cancellation. (You say you "tried" to cancel, has this cancellation been actioned by them?)

Yes, it has been actioned by them but when I was cancelling, I wasn't informed of any charges - I stupidly assumed I had 30 days, Ive just read my policy and it says 14.

Yes, they were quoted in the policy which you should have had 14 days to read (I am assuming they have applied the charges correctly).

No, you cannot continue the cover, but you still have to pay the charges which you agreed to up front.
The insurer will have some costs associated with the cancellation and will have lost business.

The 14 days you are offered is for to read the policy (including cancelleation fees) and decide whether it suits your needs.
It's not leeway to allow for any change in circumstances.
