The reason that he has given you notice this early is precisely in order to try to force you to sign the AST. This is a blatant attempt at manipulation.
    Yes.
OP, try to look at it as nothing personal, just business. For all you know, the LL may be reading this forum.
I'd start looking for another rental in any case. It will put you in a stronger position.

Well, it may be business for him but for me it is very personal. This is the roof of my head and the head of my pre-school aged children.

We have been nothing but good tenants and we don't deserve this treatment. Especially seeing how nice he has always been. For some time before this whole mess started, I even considered staying in this rented house instead of buying, because I loved it so much and took care of it as my own. Now I cannot sleep for worry.

That will teach me - although that's the lesson I hope will never come in useful again, because never in my worst nightmare am I going to rent again, ever. And please don't tell me "never say never again".

Ah, wasn't my suspicious mind then .... some LAs will serve a S21 to a T if they won't sign an agreement and LL hasn't a clue (just told you're moving). Was kind of hoping it was something like that for you because then you could have approached LL directly :(

Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face. LLs like this obviously relish their power position over Ts. Kind of reminds me of when I say to my daughter something along the lines of "if you can't do what you're told then I am taking away your TV".

Really sorry for the position you're in. Could you possibly look at houses for sale on RM and for rent on RM. There are properties out there that are up for sale AND rent and whilst I deplore this (when prospective Ts are told long term rent when in fact it's not!) in this case you do only want it for 4 - 6 months. You could approach them and tell them you're aware that they want to sell and happy to allow viewings and that you won't be overstaying. So you don't do the move twice I'd be tempted to rent furnished and put most of own stuff in storage.

You will get through this xxx

When I thank a post in a thread I've not posted in,
it means that I agree with that post and have nothing further to add.

Well, I just received the notice.

Guess I still have a chance to get back to the LL and offer him the AST.
Personally, I would not sign the AST.

As surreybased says, you need to separate the questions of buying a house from your problems with this Landlord. You should not let this stampede you into buying a house on the wrong terms.

So you need to put the purchase on hold, I would say, and resolve your rental issues. Personally, I would feel sufficiently irritated to put my own notice in for a month earlier if I could and rent somewhere else, with a slight overlap - or just be bloody minded and let the LL take his Section 21 to eviction. Essentially, he would be evicting good paying tenants who will ultimately leave with a void, in order to get a void and find some hopefully paying tenants.

Maybe his problem is that he does not understand that when a tenancy goes periodic the original contract is still in place, apart from the termination clauses?
