Avoid autonet insusrance

I took out Insurance with autonet for my minibus which was quite high but when i got rid of the bus I then cancelled the insurance with the form that they give you they were paid upto date yet they still took payments from my account so i cancelled the direct debit back in august through the bank.
I just happened to check my account and now they are using my debit card details to extract money, having been intouch with the bank they say that they cant stop anyone going into my account and taking money so it seems that we the public who have a debit card have no security what so ever with the bank they even told me that all they can do is try and reclaim the money back but they can go in again and take more, is this legal i was told to go to the insurance ombudsman but why cant we stop people going into our account and helping themselves.

If they are "stealing" from your bank account you need to tell the bank/police etc.

What is more likely is there is an admin problem (your cancellation hasn't been actioned) or they are taking whatever you owe them by way of cancellation fees and premiums.

Either way you need to establish why they are taking the money, so get in touch with them and escalate the issue to a manager if necessary.
  • i had something similar but with a credit card where i cancelled the payment but they contiued to take the payment in the end i was advised to report the card lost /stolen and was issued with a new credit card and new credit card number that way they could not keep taking the money from my new card as it wasnt authorised
im not sure if reporting the debit card stolen/lost would do the same thing but its worth a try
