My 10yo was only ever interested in factual books, and will sit and read an encyclopedia for ages.

I wanted him to read novels too as it teaches a writing style that you cant get from factual books. The first ones he would actually read were captain underpants, but that was a couple of years ago. He is enjoying the Alex Ryder series now.

    Hi
If your son likes Horrid Henry books, you cannot go wrong with Captain Underpants! Incredibly silly stories with funny illustrations, full of cheesy jokes. My 8 year old loves these books.

I second the captain underpants books. DS1 is 11 and has ADHD so concentrating on anything is a miracle, he loves those books. I'm also getting him into the horrible history e.t.c books.

My son loved Horrid Henry books, though not too sure if they are too young for a 10 year old.
Good books for boys are Alex Rider books. My 10 year old has read them all, as have I. They really are full of adventures that would thrill young boys.

  • My lad enjoys the Mokee Joe books there were three in the series written by Peter J Murray teh are suited for 9-12 year olds.

Peter Murray was a deputy head teacher at a local private school (Prince Charles attended it as a young boy), his books are not to thick which I often think puts the not so keen readers off.

Hi i have just asked my son what book he likes at the minute, he is just 11, his answer was horrible history/science (santas already got this covered lol) and also choose your own adventure books and usbourne puzzle books, the ones where there is a clue, riddle, map to solve on each page before you go on to the next part of the book.

  • Peter Pan in Scarlet (the sequel) - Geraldine McCaughrean ( is out, familiar characters and fills in all the gaps from the original)

    similiar to Harry Potter are

John Bellairs - the house with a clock in its walls
    - curse of the blue figurine
    - the figure in the shadows

    A wrinkle in time - Madeleine L'Engle

These books are recommended for 8+ (9-12 yrs)

my son is 8, he loves anything factual.....

but he also likes the books that are made to go with films that he likes...ie star wars, lord of the rings, they are big books, but have lots of pics in aswell.

when we go the library he always tends to pick out the football stories.

    hi

my 10 year old has just bought the simpsons rain or shine book £6.97 from tesco, he absolutley loves it, it has all sorts of activities and facts in it!! well worth the money.

our ethic in our house is that as long as he reading something, it improves his literacy skills, it has paid off, he is on the gifted and talented register for literacy:j
