Laptop problems

Options
I hope one of you techie guys can help me with my problem.

My brother borrowed my laptop and now ive got it back im having problems, he says he hasnt done anything to it.

When I do ctrl / alt / del the task manager no longer shows up.

I cant access it from start menu, it says its been disabled by administrator.

I cant access command prompt or regedit for the same reason.

Another account has been set up as other user, which needs password and username, but doesnt show up in the user account section of control panel items, but shows up when switch user has been chosen.

My account still shows as its the administrator so I havent got a clue whats going on.

Thanks

It does sound as though your account has been changed such that it isn't the full administrator account. Given that there is another account, I presume that is now the administrator account.

If you don't know the password, you can boot from a CD and change the password to something you do know. The link below is for the emergency boot CD, which contains a password wizard tool.

We inherited a laptop from my wife's old workplace when the company went out of business. She only had a standard user account, so I used this to get into the administrator account.

Many viruses stop all of the above, try a full scan (after updating) with malwarebytes if you can, fix anything found before closing

If you haven't anything important stored on the machine, perhaps consider a Factory Restore. Don't lend anyone your laptop again. :)
  • I'd have to agree with a virus being a likely culprit. Many try and make life harder for you to remove them by disabling certain features, setting up other users etc.

I'd perhaps use the EBCD to change the admin password back to something i can remember, log into that through safe mode, not connected to the net and see if i can use some programs installed to a flash drive to scan and remove threats..
