Computers are complicated things, let's isolate the issue. Unplug it from your PC, and plug it into an iPod, or the headphone socket on a TV or anything with a headphone socket. Play around with the volume on the Creative AND whatever device is connected to it - are we now sure it's the Creative at fault?

Sorry for late response - other matters were more pressing.

Speakers plugged into TV and work fine.

So do we now assume its the Creative Soundcard or something else?
  • See #4 for the correct test

    or

    - pull your SBCard & test on the onboard output port
    - if it works on the onboard its the the SBCard
    - your own #12 tells you its the SBCard

Looks like it was plugged into the wrong port on the soundcard or the soundcard isn't configured probably (most likely) or there's something wrong with the soundcard hardware (least likely). Run through those in order, for the hardware side it must be worth pulling the soundcard out and putting back in. You could even have been playing around with the equaliser software!

I also noticed you mentioned the sub works at around 3/4 volume when the jack is plugged partially into it? If so it'd be worth checking the cable you are using to go from the sound card to the sub - check the jack on the sound card too.
