dual voltage appliance problem

Bought a hair dryer advertised as dual voltage and their recommended plug adaptor.
Works fine but the hair dryer has two settings weak and strong and it will only work on the UK electric on the higher setting. It states this in the manual, but of course I didn't have the manual when I ordered.
Would prefer to get it working on the lower setting if I can, rather than return it. (The higher setting is no use to me.)
(I also tried using a shaver socket on the alternative voltage but that didn't produce enough power for it to work at all!)
Is there a suitable adaptor to get the lower setting working or am I out of luck.
Hair dryer is here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Conair-Styler-Dryer-Attachments-Voltage/dp/B001G1ESU0

To use the lower setting you would have to run the appliance on US voltage 110V.
A transformer to do this is here.
