Next month i'm off to Rome for a few days and was wondering if you jolly bunch had any suggestions for things to do and places to stay.
I'm aware of all the ancient stuff there is to see and i'm also planning on watching some italian football but have you got any other suggestions?
Also where is the best place to find a hotel? there seem to be loads of different areas and i'm trying to find somewhere pretty convenient for half decent nightlife and not too far to be travelling each day.
Cheers

For hotels, I'd recommend doing a search on venere.com - really helpful website with lots of good maps/reviews, and reasonable prices too (which you also don't have to pay in advance)
Plus for 4% off, use code: BK5HX8W
Hope that helps0 -
Unless it's a big game just buy the tickets on the day from the ticket office. Watched football in Spain and Italy and always done that, unless it's a big game of course. Not sure if they sell the tickets online and then you could pick them up from the stadium.2p off is still 2p off!0

Try here for hotels.

I'd stay nearer to the Vatican, rather than nearer to Termini, which is on the seedy side of things. Everywhere's pretty central to walk to anyway.
We stayed just near the City Walls 5 min walk from Vatican City last year (sort of behind Castel Sant Angelo, the big round building) and it was lovely, and safe at night.
Things to do:
Climb to the top of the Vatican - even if you're not religious, the views are amazing
Have a meal in Travastere (or Trastevere, whichever!), the old bohemian part of town, very rustic, very untouristy.
Go everywhere on foot - trust me, the architecture is worth looking at
The Colosseum is good
Don't go on a river cruise, not worth it and the river is not made the most of in my opinion
It's a brill city, you will love it i'm sure. I like it better than Barcelona, Madrid, Paris and Nice.0 -
We stayed in the Termini District in March, the hotel was fabulous and it was safe to go out at night. 5 minutes walk from the main metro lines and trains, so really easy to navigate to and from.
Must see's are...Vatican City, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps,Colosseum and Pantheon...we took a laminated map and 2 guide books and planned our day in advance to make the most of it.
We are looking at going again next year!
Have a great holiday

Thing is i'm not all that interested in museums full of pretty paintings and statues - things like the Science Museum and Imperial War Museum are more up my street.
So any other suggestions? Quirky idea's are more than welcome.0 -
Don’t want to put the frighteners on your trip
But be careful of the pickpockets, especially on the underground
and the beggars, especially the dear little old ladies/with babies
when we where leaving Rome (Via the coach pick-up point)
the beggars/gipsies where having a field day
with all the tourists boarding the various buses etc
one thing for certain is it is a fantastic city with so much to see and do0 -
I'm also going to Rome in a couple of weeks and found the suggestions from other threads on MSE useful... do a search for "Rome" if you haven't already

I'd definitely recommend venere.com for checking out hotels - easy site to navigate around and the reviews by people who have actually used the hotels are an excellent way of determining the quality of the accomodation."Whatever happened to string?"0
