Travel Insurance doesn't want to issue a refund (trip hasn't started)

I planned a trip on January 2010 for 7 months however my car went on fire and I cannot think about trips anymore, I'm having hard time dealing without a car now and I had to cancel the airline ticket as well.

I purchased travel insurance about 3 weeks ago and chose the top package which was about £380 however the company doesn't want to issue me a refund because they say there is a 14 day cancellation policy and it has been 3 weeks since so now I cannot cancel the policy and get a refund.

Is there anything I can do about it or I just lost £380 for something I'm not even going to use? :(

How does your car going on fire affect a holiday 5-6 weeks hence...assuming the 2010 is meant to be 2011?

I'm working from home, and I do need my car for work purposes and now my work plans have changed because of it, I cannot take the trip and that's why I cancelled it.

Please explain how working from home requires you to have a car and that affects your ability to go on holiday? Surely working from home requires no car...or if it does you'll surely have business insurance?

You've also had the benefit of the policy since you took it out - cancellation cover, even if not for your reasons

I need to take care of getting a new car, as part of my work I DO need a car for what I do. Yes, working from home but also need the car for work reasons, and right now I cannot drive because I don't have a car, and I'm keeping what I need to do with the car ON HOLD until I get a new car, so I don't have time to think about the trip, unfortunately I had to cancel it as I explained already above.

    Makes sense?

You have had the benefit of cancellation cover (part of the insurance). The fact you have cancelled for a reason that isnt insured is not the insurers fault.

    hope that makes sense

How on earth are you paying £380 for travel insurance?
