Moving in to new home on Tuesday but...

Hi

We are in the process of buying our first house and have a quick question. Basically the place we are moving into is vacant and has been for at least 6 months. The guy has moved to Greece and has agreed that its ok to go and clean it and get it ready (we have exchanged already).
We didn't know what gas compnay he was with I asked the solicitor but they were unable to help so I asked the guy and he said he would get a bill but at the moment he hasn't done so.
There was a letter that came through the door from NPower stating that the owner has to pay an outstanding bill of £91.88.

My question is am I liable for this even though its not me who has used it?

I have taken a current reading of gas and elec.

Should I phone them and tell them that the guy is gone and that I want to stay with them?

Thanks

Mark

You're not liable. Call on completion day with an accurate reading and give them the contat details for the previous owner if you have them. You won't hear any more from them about it either way and you will start with a clean slate.

  • U don't need to stay with Npower. I have a thing about them as one of their salesman forged my signature on a 'I want to change to Npower' form when I told him I wasn't interested! It took months to sort out...however, in fairness I know people who have no probs with them. Personally I'd use another company just to keep it totally seperate, although they can't make you pay. Take the meter reading & send them the date of completion.
Send the bill to his solicitor to pay from the proceeds.
  • You are only liable for bills from the date which your tenancy started on your contract!
