New Single parent- what can I claim?

My husband and I are seperating, he is moving out next week and I will be at home looking after 2 children. I am currently claiming maternity allowance of £105.00 as I was made redundant in June. My eldest child is 2 and the other is 3 weeks old. We have a mortgage on our home. I have claimed JSA for 9 wks before moving on to JSA (contribution based). We have no savings. My husband is on a low income £100 a week).

I don't know if I am entitled to any benefits and am worried about how we will survive as I don't think my husband will be able to pay any money for our children. Can anyone give me any information on any benefits I can claim.

not sure what happens while you are on maternity pay but after........

if he is on such a low income you will already be getting ctc and wtc. you will need to cancel the joint claim and put in a single claim for ctc. if you are not returning to work you can clain income support as a lone parent. if youare entitled to income support, you will aslos get council tax benefit.
don't know how the mortgage will work.

Who currently get the Child Benefit?
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing
  • mortgage help should kick in 13 weeks after I/S,its at £3670 per £100,000 of outstanding mortgage or pro rata if below 100k upto a max of 200k
  • Thank you for the replies.

The child benefit is in my name. We do get WTC/CTC of £400 per month but not sure of how much of each makes up the total of £400. I do want to get another job and as I am going to be on materity allowance until april/may I will be looking for a job then as I don't want to leave my 3 week old yet. I feel it's too soon.

Even though he's on a low income, your husband should still pay to support his children. This might be a good time for him start thinking about working full time.

  • Hi There, I am in a similar position to you and have just visited these two links
    moneysavingexpert.com/family/benefits-check
    and
    turn2us.org.uk/benefits_search.aspx
The first one is on this site and gives some advice. The second will help you to calculate what you are entitled to. You will get Child Tax Credit and can get help with health costs for both kids. Check out the Healthy Start Vouchers which you can claim for both kids, not just the baby. Also, see if you can get help for yourself with dental, prescrition and eyecare costs. You may be able to claim for help with childcare when you decide to return to work (when and if you are ready) and you can also get a 25% reduction in your Council Tax as a single adult occupant and Council Tax benefit.
You should find links to everything you need at the above two addresses. I hope it helps. Good luck. x
