i have just set up a wireless modem/router for a friend to enable her to use laptop anywhere in house.
i set it up on friday and it worked perfectly but then she rang the next day to say it wasnt working.
i have been to have a look and the wireless part is working fine,connected/signal strength excellent etc, etc.
but each time i open internet explorer i get the message "this page cannot be displayed"(the white one with all the text)
i can use the internet by plugging in the ethernet cable and everything is fine but as soon as i try to use it without i get this problem.
it is a toshiba laptop running xp home and the modem router is a linksys WAG354G.
any ideas anyone?

have you checked that you typed the security key in correctly when you were connecting the laptop to the router?Ever stop to think and forget to start again?0

Is it encrypted - if you can't ping 192.168.1.1 it usually means a mismatched key, or possibly she is connecting to any router in range instead.

thanks for speedy replies.
yes its encrypted wpa/psk and according to task bar at bottom its connected.
its just when i open internet explorer it wont let me view anything.
i can get to 192.168.1.1 page by connecting ethernet cable no problems but she just wants to connect laptop to internet via this access point.0 -
it may say connected, but if the key is mismatched it isn't really. If after right clicking on the wireless icon and doing a repair, and you still can't connect to 192.168.1.1 or ping it, then try reinputting or copy and pasting the key. If that doesn't work, post the output of start, run, cmd
ipconfig /all >c:\1.txt
notepad c:\1.txt
if you can ping the router wirelessly, then it is probably an internet explorer issue.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
thanks for you help albatross, will go and have another go tommorow and will also try her laptop on my network to see if it is an ie problem or network problem.
thanks again.0 -
I don't think it's IE, cos it works wired..
If you are really connected, the router should issue the wireless card with a 192.168.1.x ip address, if you haven't got that, then the authentication between the router and the laptop has failed.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
