I have purchased some Infiniti Professional dual layered dvd 8x rw discs that are 8.5GB and am having trouble getting them to play in the sony dvd player plugged in to the tv. any help would be most welcome
I am formatting the discs first and have tried the files converted as Mpeg and .avi any help would be wonderful.

What program are you using?
Sounds like what you are doing isn't really creating a DVD as such, you are just burning a video file to the disc whereas most dvd's have a specific structure. Whilst some DVD players are able to handle this fine (as they can play mpeg etc) it seems your sony cant.
The likes of Nero have DVD creators built in that can pretty much guide you through the process.0 -
Will that DVD player handle the same files on single layer dvds. A genuine DVD has a very precise format and just dropping files onto a dvd-rw won't cut the mustard unless you have what is commonly know as a divx player (because many avi files use the divx codec).0

Hi scroogesaver
I think that you need to use a program such as DVDflick to 'author' a DVD from mpeg and avi files.
It's a free download.
Read about it here:-http://www.dvdflick.net/Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.0 -

What speed is best for most DVD players? 2x, 4x, 8x etc. as I would fit more on with higher speed but may lose on quality. just want best possible for normal dvd players0

Hi,
I use Super by erightsoft - this is free to download and use and will convert and play just about anything. I have made standard dvd's and have had no problems playing them in a number of different players - i have not used the discs you mention though.
Super can be a bit daunting at first - not the most user friendly - but there is a forum on the download site and also a list of the options and what they are for.
It can be a bit slow to boot up - which is odd - but once its started i have found it pretty quick to convert avi's to vob ( depends on your pc - i guess ) - which if i remember correctly you then burn to disc.
