Help with which electric heaters to choose?

I live in a house with no gas supply.

Our heating is in the ceilings (yes ceiling, not floor) and is completely useless - takes forever to heat up and when at full heat doesnt heat the room at all. Its also expensive to run.

We are going to invest in some electric heaters but cant decide which type to get.

Convector, Oil Filled or Halogen?

I know if each one is 2kw for example then it will use the same amount of electricity - but does anyone have any experience of how the above types of heater work - are any more effective at heating a whole room rather than the area immediately infront of it? And does one particular type work out more cost effective than the others?

Which one would you choose?

Any help would be great, thank you.

I would always start with a fan heater for speed. But there is no reason not to use any of the other types. I suppose if you wanted to look at a heat source you would get a halogen or a radiant type. It all depends on your style of living. No one type is better than any other, everyone has a different life style, and thus different heating priorities. So in the end you will have to make up your own mind as to what suits your lifestyle the best.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
  • Oil filled or convector are most suitable, I would choose a convector with a built in booster fan. Cheaper than an oil filled to buy and doesn't take time to warm up. The fan helps circulate the heat around the room.

A 3kW model has the power to heat the room up more rapidly and shouldn't use more than a 2kW if the thermostat is set the same.

Avoid halogen or a fan heater they might be OK in a garage but not really suitable for the house. The cheap halogen ones are flimsy and can burn or melt things left too close.

A wall mounted heater is safer and neater if a long term solution.

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
Halogen Heaters - Provide a warm glow which makes one warm just by looking at it! The heat is a radiant heat similar to the sun which warms up the body faster than other forms of heat, this makes them especially useful in a cold conservatory or workshop. The warm glow should stop children from touching it and a safety cut out turns the units off when and if they are knocked off. The light weight make them popular with the elderly.
