Travelling In London - Cheapest/Best?

Hello

My Husband,Myself and our 6 year old are going to London for 4 days from Sunday 19th Dec and leaving late afternoon on the 23rd. We are staying in southall (opp southall train station)and are trying to figure out the best way to travel back and for to central london each day(and also around london on tube).
From reading the TFL and Oyster site it offers me a oyster card that I should top up or have a travelcard by the day. Ideally we would like to be able to travel at peak and non peak. It also has conflicting information as to whether my 6 year old travels free or not - as I am presuming that the southall to paddington train is overground?

Would love some assistance from those of you in the 'know' on what I should purchase and expect to pay?

thanks so much
:)

No the Southall to Paddington train is not overground - it's National Rail, which is not the same thing.

Your 6 year old travels free with you on bus, tube, tram, DLR overground and certain National Rail services, of which AFAIK this is not one. Once you get to Ealing Broadway (or West Ealing, but not all trains stop there) you reach a National Rail route where he does get free travel

You need either an Oyster each or a zones 1-4 travelcard - which is more expensive at peak times. Total costs will be the same. However if you get a travelcard it will be valid for 2 for 1 offers - worth it if you want to use them.

For your son you'll need a child day return to Ealing Broadway, where free travel kicks in. I think - as you say the information is conflicting
