A quick one….I’ve got a 2 meg connection and downloading files from the web see speeds of 150- 220 k but when using bitorrent (and I’ve tried a few clients) I seem to get speeds of about 30k
Any ideas?

Files downloaded from the web are being downloaded from dedicated servers, which generally have DL speedslike the ones you are getting.
Downloading files from P2P services means you are downloading from other peoples computers, and they can limit the amount of bandwidth you get.0 -
Bitorrent depends on loads of factors........ Upload speed, Tracker used, Amount of seeds. You will rarely get your full max download speed like you do from the web0
-
It also depends on who your ISP is. A lot of ISPs now seem to have shaping in place now that slows down speeds on P2P. This is one of the reasons I chose Zen (no shaping at any time on any service). How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?

looking at the speed graph it is almost flat at about 32k so that sort of rules out bottlenecks on other peoples computers as it behaves the same way when downloading any file.
I suppose the next step is to try it on a different isp, see if I can identify shaping of some sort

With BT you dont want your upload speed set to the full speed you can upload at. BT requires to send small bits of info up when downloading, if the upload is used for all uploading and some isnt free for the downloading side of things then it chokes. I set my download to 25k with a 40k upload and speeds are usually pretty good if there a lot of seeds.0

Thought bit-torrent needed an incoming port open on the firewall. The BitComet client will work without, but warns of much reduced speed.0 -
I use Azureus and downloads usually start off at around 20kb and increase to coser to 80kb over time. However, I downloaded something this morning and I was getting speeds of over 300kb! It all seems to depend on how many people are doing the same as you and how many people are sharing.0

You may need to forward a port, if you're using a router.
Google port forwarding, and there is a site (usually 1st hit) that guides you through the whole process.0 -
To be honest this sounds run of the mill to me.
If you want to test it Ubuntu disk images are available on torrents, these come down very very fast. Try one and see if it is your conection or a slow torrent.
