Can't access new email address via Windows Live Mail

Options
I have two @ntlworld.com email addresses which have worked on WLM for over a year. Yesterday I set up a new Virgin Media Mail address which defaulted to an @virginmedia.com type. I have sent a message to this new address via one of my @ntlworld.com addresses, and I can see this message if I log in directly to the email account on VM. However, I cannot get WLM to access this new address; I keep getting asked to re-enter the password in an endless loop, and when I quit this I get the notorious ...092 error. I have followed various help scripts for setting up the WLM account manually, using ports 995 and 465 etc. but nothing works. The old ntlworld.com accounts still work fine. The Virgin help team couldn't help resolve it either.

A long time ago, I had the same problem with Outlook on an XP system; I was never able to resolve that one without ditching Outlook.

Any suggestions gratefully received...

PS - Using Win 7 (32bit) and Windows Live Mail 2011

are you using the correct settings ie imap.virginmedia.com and smtp.virginmedia.com?

to find out the settings log into webmail and go settings>pop/imap settings> then enable imap and save, and then click the 'how to set up' link

edit here is the specific settings
    Protocol: IMAP
    - Email address and password: self explanatory
    - POP server: imap.blueyonder.co.uk
    - Security type: SSL
    - Server port: 993
    (next page)
    - click on Login Required
    - smtp server: smtp.blueyonder.co.uk
    - Security type: SSL
    - Server port: 465

change blueyonder to virginmedia/ntlworld depending on what you have

    imap > pop

When I first set up the new VM email address, I didn't realise it defaulted to imap, so I initially set up my WLM account as pop3 (same as my existing ntlworls accounts). This, of course, failed. Subsequently, I have changed the VM address to a pop3 and tried to set up WLM the same, but nothing works. Whether the initial failure has changed some configuration setting somewhere, I don't know, but maybe I need to have another go at imap again. Or else delete the new address and try again?

imap is much much better than pop so try those imap settings I have said.

I tried the imap settings but WLM still couldn't access the address, keeps saying that the password isn't recognised. This is silly as I can log in directly to Virgin Mail using that very same password!

Anyway, I've given up trying to get the email address to work and have deleted it. I'll either try another new one, or a Hotmail one, or investigate a different email client - I hate the ribbon icons on WLM 2011.

Apparently, virginmedia.com email accounts expect the username to be the full email address (such as richard.branson@virginmedia.com). My old ntlworld.com accounts were less fussy and accepted a username of say, richard.branson.

The username is found in the Account Properties > Servers tab, Incoming Mail Server > E-mail Username.
