Wi-FI On&Off, Interminttently

Options
Dear All

The wireless connection with my desktop is going ON and OFF frequently (intermittent). It is very annoying as sometimes you are in the middle of some online activities, such as downloading, fill in the application form, etc and it is suddenly disconnected. It will connect automatically a few minutes later though but very annoying.

I heard that this might be caused by other Wi-Fi network which is stronger or almost the same with my WI-Fi default connection.

- My connection is either very good, excellent or the lowest one is good. So I believe this is not caused my weak signal.

- In the "View wireless network" I can see that there are 2 others Wi-Fi network which sometimes have stronger signal or almost similar to my Wi-Fi default connection. I do not have connection and control with these two other networks.

Is there anything I could do to fix this problem ? or
Probably any freeware software available to be downloaded to sort this out ?

Thank you for your time.

If it isn't interference from another access point and http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider is your best option for testing that then I have to ask...

What encryption type are you using?
Is there an unknown car parked nearby?
Do you trust your neighbours (and any spotty teenage kids they may have).

The reason I ask those questions is because one part of the hacking procedure for WiFi involves forcing clients off so they have to re-establish their connection exchanging keys in the process.

That said it's more likely to be interference imo.

Change the wireless channel via the router interface. Odds are that a nearby network is on the same channel.
If you download and install the Inssider software as kwikbreaks suggests, it will scan for and display the current channels being used by all the detectable wireless networks. Then select a different channel to use.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Thank you for your time. Npw your question:

    1. WPA
    2. There is a private car Park for 2 cars. (e.g the car is metal certainly)
    3. I believe I trust them. Also I do not open my Bank a/c etc at home, as I normally do this at the work place.

I will try to download the software.

As said previously try changing channels on your wireless devices. Channels 1, 6 or 11 are your best options to avoid 'overlap'.

Some cordless phones and wireless cameras (CCTV type mostly) can cause disruption with WiFi networks, again channing to a non-overlapping channel will usually solve this.

Have you ruled out problems with the card or router too? Try connecting via ethernet cable and see if the problem still occurs.

I also recall some issues early on with Windows Vista/7 intermittently dropping WiFi connections. If you're using either of these Operating Systems make sure you're up-to-date with any critical updates from Microsoft.

changing the channel as Macman and Mista said is your best bet to rule interferance out (as much as possible)
  • I had a similar issue and changing the channel should solve the issue for you. If you scan for other networks in your area depending on your wifi software you can actually see what the other nearby wifi channels are and so can pick a new channel that is less likely to have interference.
