Cat trying to wee a lot!

Hey all, new here, so be gentle ;)

Just a small query, we have our 2 kittens, now 11 1/2 weeks old, we have had them for 5 weeks now, things have been fine, but we just have. 2 little queries, maybe worrying about nothing, but thought it better to ask rather than not ask and worry!

For a start, our boy, Ben has still not got a healthy, wet, cold cat like nose, his nose is always dry and warm, and generally a bit crusty, more like black crust around the bottom of his nostrils, he breathes fine, his squeak is now becoming a meow, but we just worry as it isn't "how it should be".

Thie other query is the little girl, Lola, she has been fine, but today she got up, has her breakfast and did her number 1 & 2 as usual for her mornings after a little play! But in the afternoon, she (over a period of a few hours) probably went and sat in the litter, as if to try and do a wee maybe 2 or 3 times an hour, each time sitting there for 2-5 mins and then got straight up, sometimes burying, sometimes not, but it's unusual to see her dptry and go so much, I know she might have just needed to go for a poo but couldn't get it out, and she dropped something ceremoniously large for a small 11 week old kitten a bit later on!! I'm thinking just to keep an eye on her when she gets up from her nap, don't want to look as though I am over worrying, but also do not want to look complacent, so any thoughts would be great!

Thanks!

The cold wet nose thing is a bit of a myth! A dry warm nose is healthy if there is nothing wrong, eg sneezing or being sick etc. That kitten might just have a bit of dirt around his nostrils.

The other kitten...well, I would be round at the vet pdq with that one. If she is unable to pee it is SERIOUS and must have immediate veterinary attention. She could die if her bladder is full and she can't empty it. Otherwise if she is constipated then that can be pretty serious too. You really need to sort out which one it is. If it's the waterworks call the vet tonight...really, I mean it, if you think your kitten cannot urinate that is an emergency and your vet will have to empty her bladder for her without delay.
  • Thanks, its not that she can't seem to go, she just seems to go a lot, small update:

She has just gone when her brother did about an hour ago, after eating, they played for an hour or so and she was back in the litter, sat there for maybe 2-3 minutes, looking round, and left a prety usual pee amount in the litter, didn't bury (Unusual for her) and went off. While sitting there she was looking round a lot, maybe slightly hunched to one side whilst sitting, too? (maybe I'm imagining it as I don't usually sit intently staring at her as she goes about her business!)

As she does seem to be going to the toilet for btoh number 1 and number 2, she is emptying herself, but we will call the vet first thing tomorrow morning to get their thoughts and try to get her checked out asap!

OK, I've just reread your message and the thing about her dropping something "large" makes me think she was more than likely constipated. The vet can give her some liquid paraffin to help soften her stool and make things more comfortable. If she's on dry food it might be a good idea to give her some wet food as well as cats aren't always very good at drinking enough water.

Sorry if I alarmed you earlier....if Lola is running around and being herself then don't worry. If she had been unable to pee all day long then she'd be in a lot of distress. I still think it'd be a very very good idea to take her to the vet tomorrow.

Ahhh kitties, they are worse than children!!!

I get excited over the poo department as one of mine has a terrible issue with constipation and is on daily medication which I have to have sent from the USA.

Anyway, it sounds like Lola is OK now and not in any obvious distress. Maybe she's got cystitis or something like that. Hovering over the litter tray before peeing can be one of the give away signs.

The situation is under control, so sleep well, and good luck at the vet's.

Thanks for your help, yeah we just called the vets emergency line just to have a chat about things and she put ti down to Cystitis and said its obviously not a life threatening condition but something that'll need aorting, so we will go tomorrow morning and get her checked out and start the fun of kitty medication!!! :D

She's full of fun right now, bouncing around all over the offcie as I type this, and trying to eat my crisps!!!!!

She says thankyou for the concern, though :)
  • After going to the vets today it turns out it is Cystitis, real pain but could really have been a lot worse, she has antibiotics, cunningly enough, in pink, which we managed to hide inside one of her treats and she gobbled it down, still spending 5 mins or so on the tray as of tonight, but hopefully as things kick in overnight, they can only get better for her condition :)

Meanwhile, Ben has now somehow tweaked his ankle/leg!!! Talk about unluckiness, he was playing with Lola downstairs, ran upstairs with her, we came up 5 mins later to find him asleep on our bed, when Lola joined him he walked over to her with a bit of a limp and has been limping since, he's still climbing, jumping, clawing and acting as normal, but sometimes lifting it when sitting up and not putting we much weight on it when he walks! After some research around the internet it seems it could well be a small sprain (I'm not surprised with the way they throw eachother around when playfighting!) which should hopefully subside in 48-72 hours, so we'll be keeping an eye on him, too!

We are good pet owners really!! Just seems to have not been the best 24 hours for out kitties! Just hope they can both improve by tomorrow :)

Poor little Lola, cystitis can be very painful, so she'll be a lot happier when the meds do their stuff. And as for Ben and his leg...well, these things do happen especially with all the mad playing that kittens do. If you take him to the vet you can be guaranteed that his limp will disappear when he's in the consulting room, lol.

I've no doubt that you're a great pet keeper, you obviously care very much about your wee babies.
  • Thanks for your help TawnyOwl, its been a rough 24 hours!!

Ben has been given some anti inflamitries, and after 2 doses already he seems to be doing very well, abck to his usual self, although sleeping a lot more, maybe because he's 12 weeks and getting more into long cat naps, as well as his recovery sleeps for his leg, bless him :)

Lola is doing better too, she seems to be going to the toilet less than before, not the usual amount yet, but she's had 5 doses of antibiotics (2 thursday, 2 yesterday, 1 today so far) and seems to be doing better, less frequent toilet stops that don't last quite as long as before, which is nice, so I'm hoping the tablets are woring for her, although it has made her poo a bit softer, even coming out with a comical "ploppy fart" noise, bless her, I don't think she sees the funny side of the noise!!

All in all though, things do seem to be getting better, touch wood, and just wanted to thank you for you good (and correct) advice and help, its been very reassuring!
