bill from ex-supplier "glide"

Options
We have just received an electricity bill from the supplier of the previous tenants who used the company 'glide' to pay for their bills. They have informed us that we do have to pay the bill, which is only for the month of July as this is apparently the time it takes for the switchover to npower (?). But being students we were not in the property for the vast majority of that month and were therefore using no electricity.. (the bill is for £140!) Having provided npower (ringing them first thing tomorrow) with the meter readings on the date we moved in are we therefore not paying twice? And why is this 'glide' bill so high considering we were not in the property?! We dont really know what to expect, it doesnt seem a fair bill at all...

You are on a deemed contract with the existing supplier from the day you move in, so you have to pay for whatever you have used in that period until the switch (which typically takes 4-5 weeks). You should have phoned glide on the day you moved in and given them meter readings, as it seems the outgoing tenants did not bother. Unless you can prove the meter reading on the day you started your tenancy, you may have difficulty, as it's impossible to know what usage was before you moved in and what after.
Presumably the bill covers both sides of the tenancy start date.

Is it just for electricity? Does it have a meter reading on it? You shouldn't have given npower the meter reading until they took over the supply. Between moving in and npower taking over you should pay the previous supplier and you should have given them that first reading otherwise you are likely paying the previous tenant's final bill as well. You should call Glide.
