Peugeot 307 locking system

Hi all - my OH's Peugoet 307 was making a funny 'zzzhhhh' noise last week when he locked it with the blipper on the key (as you can see I am not the techie in the family lol) and this weekend although it's still making the locking noise neither the blipper or using the key in the drivers door will lock the car.
Has anyone else experienced this and was it something simple before I go and incur a no doubt hefty gargae bill? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks
