redundancy selection

hi there
if there is a redundancy exercise going on and someone had been off sick for 2-3 months, what kind of affect would this have on their decision?

thanks in advance

  • They would most likely score lower than other members of staff in this criteria.

    Their score maybe adjusted slightly in a positive way if it is related to a disability that the employer is aware of but with 2-3 months sickness I would still expect their score in this particular section to be lower than the majority of other staff at risk.

    thanks googlewhacker, that's what i suspected and of course i understand why. would an employer use it as an opportunity to 'get rid' of someone on sick leave, i am guessing they'd have to be careful about that? who knows

    ps saw Dave Gorman live a few years ago, he was very very good...clever man!

    If the redundancy is genuine then yes they can make it so that person scores the worst if they so wished. (Sorry if that isn't what you wanted to hear).

    You would have the right to see how the other contenders scored but you wouldn't have the right to see the names next to the scores (but you maybe able to work out who is who)

    thanks for your honesty, i suspected as much. that's useful information...
  • It depends on the company policy. A lot of people where I work have just been put at risk. Where there is a pool of people in the same job, at our place, I think the criteria is as follows;
    Skills and Competence 70%
    Sickness record over last 2 years 10%
    Disciplinary record over last 2 years 10%
    LIFO 10%
