Sofa delivery error and carpet fitting

Argh, this is a toughie!
We ordered a sofa that was supposed to turn up in mid-December and the company has very efficiently got it ready for us now, and has informed us they will be delivering on Friday. They were completely inflexible about the delivery date, and regardless of that my OH has now agreed to the prescribed time. I don't think it's negotiable.
Anyway, our living room is currently a building site and needs re-plastering and a new carpet, both jobs we had hoped to have completed by the time the (large, heavy) sofa arrived.
I'm not so worried about the plastering - the sofa can sit in the middle of the room and we'll cover it in dust sheets but obviously this is not ideal. Plasterer had been warned this may happen.
But I am worried about the carpet. We will have to move the sofa out to have this job done, and there simply isn't space in any other room for the sofa to go. My only thoughts are the hallway (which would be a crashing inconvenience and perhaps not even possible) or...the kitchen! Again, not likely to be doable.
Any thoughts on how to solve this one? I haven't had carpet fitted before so don't even know how long it takes. I am hoping that if it's just a few hours we can move the sofa on to the landing, but no idea what we'll do if it takes longer or if it won't fit.
Am I missing any obvious solutions that don't involve putting said sofa in storage? I don't think we can take the stress of that right now tbh. You guys know what a lengthy refurb can do to one's nerves...
HELP!
EDIT: Alternatively - is there any such thing as a same or next day carpet fitting service? Could be the only way!

I think , as andrew-b , that movable sofa's are not a problem.
Mine was ( and its a very large 3 seater) easily moved back and forth .
I know most 'contracts' stipulate a clear room , but a welcome . with a cuppa , works !if it's just a few hours we can move the sofa on to the
My latest carpet was over 40 sq yards plus a join , in a thru lounge with an arch .
But even with two cups of tea , they were gone within 2 hours.

one room can be done very easily in a couple of hours.....even if there are a few cuts to be made.
normally the carpet shop has fitters they either supply or recommend. In the past I've arranged fitter and he usually gets paid cash on completion - typically it's around £30-40 for one room.
Keen photographer with sales in the UK and abroad.
Willing to offer advice on camera equipment and photography if i can!0 -
I generally find a £20.00 note works wonders in these situations. Don't go down the whole "It's OK we'll move it when you're ready" route, it doesn't work like that. The job will take longer with the sofa in the room, so the fitters deserve a bit of extra cash.
Carpet fitters will fit between 80 - 200 m2/day depending on whether 1 or 2 man team / how quick they are / how expeienced they are / and how careful they are. It is likely your fitting will be in the afternoon, most fitters will only on hall/stairs/landing a day, and they prefer to do that in the morning.Unless it is damaged or discontinued - ignore any discount of over 25%0 -
Cancel the order for the sofa as delivery was quoted for December and you worked around that date, you can offer to have it delivered to a storage center that they can pay for and see if they agree to it.0
