Hi
just looking for a bit of advice. If a public holiday is declared (yes its the royal wedding day) can my employer refuse to allow it?
Employer says he wont give us this day as a holiday.

Basically it depends on what your contract says about holidays.
If your contact says you have 28 days holiday including bank holidays then your employer does not have to give you an extra day. However if your contract says you get X number of holidays PLUS bank holidays then you are entitled to the extra bank holiday.0 -

If your contact says you have 28 days holiday including bank holidays then your employer does not have to give you an extra day. However if your contract says you get X number of holidays PLUS bank holidays then you are entitled to the extra bank holiday.
Just a note - don't stop reading the contract after it says plus bank holidays. There may be a bit more to the sentence. The whole thing could read "You are entitled to X working days as holidays plus all public holidays that the employer observes".
If it has this bit on the end and the employer say's it's business as usual, then you are not entitled to the extra day.0 -
Good point - and in Scotland they have two at New Year, don't they? Because they had New Year's Day as a holiday when England didn't. As i said on another thread its a con if you think you will get an xtra day.
If your contract says 28 days then it could mean 9 forced holidays (bank holidays) and only 19 left for you to choose yourself.Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0
