Can't get istore to work - should I give up and use Amazon or the like?

iTunes had been working fine for ages, put laptop in for a virus removal and now can't access the iTunes store. Have reinstalled iTunes 3 times now.
Any ideas - or is it easy just to buy from Amazon or the like and then how do I get it into iTunes?
