If its 12-18 months old or more, chances are the heatsink has got blocked full of fluff.
My ways of resolving in order:
1) Shine a torch into the fan intake on the bottom of the laptop and look through the vent. If you can't see any light its blocked and the CPU is throttling the speed to save itself. It'll need the bottom taking off to clean the gap between the fan and the heatsink as by the time they get to that point, they're beyond just giving it a blast with a can of air duster.
2) Download and install CCleaner and run it. On many computers I do if its not been done, it usually finds a few GB that can be removed. Also using CCLeaner go through the list of startup items and remove whats not needed...google the entries.
3) Download and install IOBit Smartdefrag and run it. If the hard drive hasn't been defragged for a while it can take an age but it'll speed up file access.0 -

Download MALWAREBYTES (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
Open malwarebytes and goto UPDATE and click 'check for updates'. After its updated goto SCANNER and click PERFORM QUICK SCAN then click SCAN
Remove everything thats found (needs to be ticked)
Post the COMPLETE log here AFTER youve deleted everything it finds
If anything was found then do the exact same but run a FULL scan
reboot
Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
Click MAIN MENU then DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE(Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)
If you get a message that you cant write to the hosts file then Press the SHIFT key, and whilst holding it RIGHT CLICK and select RUN AS (admin):idea:0 -

There may be many reasons responsible for slow down. For example, if you have any antivirus software installed on your laptop that is occupying a large portion of RAM competing with other applications. You may prefer Deep Freeze facility to CCleaner as it clears all temporary internet files and folder on the root drive automatically when you switch off your PC.0

Is this the same laptop you had the problem of being slow back in March?0
