Been looking on moneysupermarket for car insurance & best quote is with a company called rsa formerly royal sun alliance has anyone had any dealings with these as am a bit dubious as they seem very cheap

RSA have been around for a very long time (More Than as most people know them). They're ok ... ish.... they out source A LOT so can be a bit awkward

I've used More Than for years, always been cheapest for me.

Luckily (touch wood), I've never had to make a claim, so don't know how good they are when paying claims.

They did mess my renewal up a bit (I was changing my yearly milage) but helpful on the phone and since it was there error they took the cost of the mistake.

Only minor issue is there Indian Call Centre, if you use the 0800 number on Say No To 0870 you'll get through to the UK Centre who has more control over things.
