Hi,
Hope this is the right part of the forums! I cashed a cheque in with NatWest on Saturday and I was in a bit of a hurry so I put what the assistant gave me back in my coat pocket. I've just noticed today, however, that she has given me the cheque back? Is this normal?
Thanks!
Ian.

I assume 'your' cheque from 'your' account? Since the Cheques Act 1992 ...... you can't draw cheques to 'cash' anymore. They need a payee and to be paid into an account. If you also provided your Debit Card to swipe open the account .... the funds have come directly via that? Hence the cheque - totally superfluous - has simply been returned to you. What shows on your account (cash / cheque)?
But surely the cashier indicated that?If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
Sorry, I wasn't clear! I received a cheque from the DPS (Deposit Protection Service) that I wanted to put into my account.
Thanks!

In which case it's not going to clear - from your pocket? Initially - at least (until its imaged and turned into electronic data) - the cheque Clearing system needs the piece of paper? Without it you're not going to get your account credited. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -

Haha, nooooo! I handed my cheque in and stuff and she confirmed the payment will take a few days to clear... but I was given the original cheque back... that's my query... is that normal to get the original cheque back? =P0 -
No, it isn't normal, she made a mistake and you won't get credited with the money. You'll have to go back to the bank and pay it in again.0

They need the cheque! Go back asap.0

Absolutely not. Without the physical cheque the Clearing process can't take place.
It's only if a cheque goes AWOL after it's been imaged .... that the system has enough data that they can put in a substitute document. But you don't get to that point at the counterIf you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0
