Hi,
I'm need a fair bit of work doing and I'd like to have it done by professionals. I'm going to need Joiners, an Electician and a Plumber. Is there anywhere that I can find out what a fair day rate for these trades is? I'm in Central Scotland.

You dont want day rates - get a fixed price for the work that needs done. Get a 2/3 quotes for each trade to make sure they are all similar and make sure they all quote for the same work.0

Be careful of the word "estimate" this is only a way of saying it will be "about this price" when you hear a price you are happy with ask for a written quotation.
Whatever you do don't ask anyone to do a job if they only have a business card with a mobile phone number on it, you need to know where they live or where their premises are. (I speak from experience on this one)
Some of these people will try it on at anything up to £500 per day, I live in Leeds and I eventually got a professional at £90 per day (fixed price in writing £180) + paint which he said I could buy separately if I preferred.
Top price I got was £1100 + V.A.T0 -
Another thing don't use an outfit called "Rated people"
They are the ones I got the cowboy from that only has a mobile number that he will never answer if he knows you are after him for doing half a job.
Hope this is of some small help.0 -

Just to balance things, I don't have any connection to this site but I got two of the best tradesmen I ever worked with (A joiner and a plumber) via this site so it's like anything else, use your head. After getting the initial contacts from RatedPeople I did my own research about these men locally and it turned up they are both known as good professionals in our area.
I turned to this site after I was left high and dry by so call reliable local/reccomendation/ear to mouth builder and carpenter.Five exclamation marks the sure sign of an insane mind!!!!!

It wasn't just that the plasterer I got was a cowboy Avantra it was the attitude of the fella I spoke to at rated people which was "it's nothing to do with us"
I'm sure many more people as well as me assumed that the people on this site were "rated" because they had been checked out.
The truth is ANYBODY can join this site as long as they pay the subscription fee.
Glad your experience was a good one:)0 -
As others have said, get a price for the job. You will find prices will vary staggeringly. Ive just had some quotes to fit a new boiler and the plumbers quotes varied from 800quid for the cheapest upto 3000quid for the most expensive (and that wasnt british gas!). I had a sparky come out and do some work and he was about £20 an hour. All varies depending up on area and who you speak to. Get 2 or 3 quotes and compare them!0
