Bit of help please re : non working DVD drive

Need some technical help please someone.....


1) our Laptop has a dvd/cdrw in it , but it will only play CD`s , burnt and originals , but no sorty of DVD , in `system` then `hardware` it shows as all ok , doenst say its missing drivers or anything.....no exclamation marks ...any ideas ?

2) I have downloaded two .RAR files , then downloaded free 45 day Winzip to open them with but not sure how to open the files , thers loads of them ! with .chz extensions...

    dvd part of the drive has failed , 5 minute job with a screwdriver to swap them ( one screw normally) just check if yours is sata or IDE / ATAPI but pulling it , order a replacement off ebay. If you are lucky there is one off your laptop for sale , otherwise pop the plastic bezel off the old one and clip on the new one

    Thanks for your help , really appreciated , how do i make sure its IDE/ATAPI or sata ? do i physically take it out to look ?

  • can I just confirm the drive doesn't read any kind of dvd (data or movie) or does it just not play movie DVDs?

    easiest way to open .rar files is with winrar

    it doesnt open any kidn of DVD , It even says DVD on the side!

    I only spotted your second question after seeing the comment about winrar.

    It seems that your rar archives contain other archives within them (thats what chz files are). I don't know if WinZip supports them but it's worth trying. If not you'll need to find an archiver that does.
