I liked the Imperial Hotel Tramontano, it is directly on the cliff face overloookiung the sea, just a few minutes to walk to the centre and close the departure points for ferries to Capri. It isn't cheap but Sorrento is not a cheap destination, it also avoid hills into the town centre but Sorrento is generally hilly and any hotels outside the centre are likely to involve uphill walking or a lot of taxi's0

I stayed there as well, really central. Wonderfully oldie worldie.0

Europa Grand is a good hotel. Right on the top with views across the harbour. Own private beach (don't expect too much sand) via a lift down from opposite reception and a little walk through the rock tunnel. Great terrace for breakfast(great breakfast too)
Another is the Antiche Mura just off Tasso Piazza. Eat your breakfast in the garden surrounded by lemon trees.
And both only 100 metres from the shops.
ps. a great restaurant is the garden0 -
thanks will have a look at all suggestions, has anyone stayed at hotel La Favorita??0

Most of the hotels on the hillside on the road out of Sorrento have excellent free shuttle bus services taking just a few minutes directly into town. The hotel I stayed at has a shuttle every hour throughout the day until nearly midnight (apart from 2-4pm), airconditioned and punctual. The drop-off point was an extremely convenient central point with shaded benches for waiting on the way back.
The great advantage of staying just out of town is that Sorrento itself is very hot, noisy and bustling in the main season. It is a wonderful after a day sightseeing in the heat, to escape out of town and enjoy the amazing views, peace and quiet and breathe of fresh air that can be experienced a little higher up, listening to the sound of birdsong instead of mopeds, then pop back down into town in just a few minutes, in the evening.0 -
I agree with Bronnie. We stayed at Il Nido, a little outside of Sorrento with great sea views and hourly bus shuttle service so very convenient. It had a restaurant on the terrace where you could see the bay of Naples and watch the sun set eating great food and wine- very resonable too. When we went Il Nido was rated no1 best place to stay in Sorrento on trip advisor, though was 4 years ago now- it's not very luxurious but great value for money.Yesterday is today's memories, tomorrow is today's dreams

We stayed here for a week on half board - quite impressed with the evening meals. 5 minute walk to the town centre.

Tripadvisor reviews - not all complimentary of cause - but mainly in praise of the hotel! http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g187782-d276202-Reviews-Grand_Hotel_Capodimonte-Sorrento_Campania.html
You've not indicated what your budget is but I found it reasonable.
Edited to add: It was a flat walk into town but there was no pavement in places so it got interesting at times - lots of scooters to contend with!0 -

We stayed at La Meridiana, 15 min or so walk to centre. No posh but good value, would stay there again.0

Much depends on your budget but the Grand Hotel Vittorio is the best hotel in town. Its grounds lead to the main square and it has a private lift down to the harbour. There is a beautiful drive with lemon trees and an outdoor pool and rooms with lovely sea views but not cheap0
