Which games console should I buy?

Options
Hi peeps (hope this is the right place) :o

I'm thinking of buying myself a games console for Xmas because I've saved up all this year (YAY!). Only thing is I am really confused. I'm thinking of an xbox, mainly to play games when I need to chill out.I don't want to play online or watch dvds on it but I'd like to make the most of my HDTV with war / combat type games (like call of duty etc) would they be OK for a beginner?

Also, where should I start reading up on details so I don't spend my pennies on something that gathers dust at the back of the cupboard cos it's too complicated for me.

Any advice?
thanks in advance ;)

PS3 or XBOX 360 for war/combat games. 360 is better online than PS3, both are very similar though in terms of graphics and performance, and both have a few exclusive titles (e.g. Halo on 360, Gran Tourismo on PS3). The war/combat genre of game is particularly suited to online play so you might find yourself wanting to get connected after a while! PS3 has a built-in BluRay so might be better for watching HD movies. People often buy what their friends have so they can play online.

Wii for party games and kids games.

I have all three. Xbox 360 is better online despite the cost of a XBox Live subscription.

but what would make me consider a PS3 other than the built-in blu-ray player? (considering one for myself!)

Thanks guys. I'm using a temp laptop while mine gets repaired for some reason I can't open the links with loan laptop. But I will do a google search and check your links when I'm at college. just saw the xbox 4GB on Amazon within my price range the buyers reviews seem to recommend it as a good starter for anyone new to gaming /occasional players. Also I can see if it suits me and buy the extra hdd / play online later on which will give me time to hone some skills and save up the extr £70.00). Your advice makes me think it's the one for me THANK U for the quick responses!:T
  • I'd definitely go Xbox 360 - Halo is an absolute must :) I pretty much got an Xbox just so I could play it.

I already had a Wii - great for kids and parties, but not for hardcore gaming - and I got a PS3 a few weeks ago - but only because I got a cheap broken one on eBay to fix up - it's pretty good so far but I much prefer the Xbox controller.

A guy at uni told me that Sainsbury's had a really good deal on the 250GB ones in store, I think for £180? Not sure if it is still available tho, I guess they would sell quickly.

Just make sure you keep your shiney new console well ventilated and preferably off the floor (where there may be a lot of dust). The new ones should stand up to much more abuse than the old models, but better safe than sorry!

It has true 1:1 pixel mapping upscaling (making dvds, family photos and video files look better assuming everythings set correctly and its used with a 1080P tv)
Connects to the web unlike the xbox
Free vidzone (videos on demand) and iplayer
    No extra to go online
Free connection to sony site to download demos etc
Capable of 24bit 7.1 surround sound
    Its not made by microsoft

    dont get the 4gb
its a false economy and you may find some games wont fully work on it
IIRC there was a problem with Halo Reach on the 4GB

    PS watch out for fanboys

I have the wii for much cheapness and my 4 year old. But then I have a PC for proper gaming;)

If I had the money it'd be the PS3, but my TV isn't good enough:(
