Aldi internet phone

Aldi are advertising a Tevion internet phone for £9.99 which you can use to make overseas calls for 2p per minute or free to other people who have the same phone. I am interested in Skype and was wondering whether this phone could be used for that? Or is it only compatible with the Tevion system? Apparently you have to download the software which comes with the phone (similiar to SKYPE?) Not really sure how Skype etc works (apart from the fact that you make calls over the internet with your PC. Any comments appreciated.

You can use the ALDI internet phone with other softphones or ATA's
I've been using it quite happily with a LINKSYS PAP2 with no problems for the past month or so.
If you have a PAP2 just put the following in the proxy and outbound proxy fields. 84.45.112.7
In the voicemail server field enter: voicemail@emediatelecom.com
This will mean you get a stuttered dial tone if someone leaves a message.
In display name put your exchange and number e.g. Durness 912345
In user id and auth id put your number in the international format e.g 441971912345
Password will be your password.
If you want a proper local dialling like a normal phone insert the following into the dial plan field (*xx|<:01???>[2-9]xxxxxS0|0[1-9]xxxxxxxxxS0|001[2-9]xx[2-9]xxxxxxS0|1[0-9]xxxxxx.|00[2-9]xxxxx.)
The 01??? to be replace by your own area code e.g 01971. this means you can call numbers in your area with just the 6 digits like a normal phone.
on the Sip menu page. insert the stun.fwdnet.net in the stun server field at the bottom of page.0 -
You may wish to edit your post, as I'm sure that you don't want that 'emoticon' to appear.
Looks a useful post.

I noticed that Tesco.com are offering similar USB phones at half price (around £7.50)0

Tesco service runs on IAX servers and not SIP. Therefore you can't use alternative equipment other than IAX compatible.
Tesco has not yet mastered incoming caller display unless it's from another tesco customer, incoming calls usually show up as "unavailable" or "*0" or "+1xxxxxxx"
There's no message waiting alert and TESCO is the exact same service as Freshtel

If you have you own sip equipment or softphone like x-lite or expresstalk etc, you can sign up for an ALdi account without having to buy the ALDI phone at: https://www.get-voip.co.uk/
You will still have to top up with £10 though if you don't want a monthly package.
All uk area codes are available with Aldi too, as opposed to less availability with Tesco.0
