Finacial help whilst caring for wife

Hi,'m not sure if this is the correct place to post this. My mate at work is having to take at least 4-6 weeks off his work to care for his wife after she has had a quadruple by pass operation. Whilst the company has said he can have as much time off as he needs, they have told him that he won't be paid at all and also that he cannot go on the sick as technically speaking it isn't him that is sick. As you can imagine he is now extremely worried as to what he is going to do without having any income at all coming in. So i was wondering, does anyone know if he would be entitled to any kind off financial help at all. I'm hoping that someone in here might be able to help or advise him with his dilemma.
Thanks in advance for any help.

  • Is his wife being paid or getting any benefits for being sick?
Could he take some of the time off as annual leave?
  • His wife only worked part time and wont be receiving any benefits. The company has said that they will let him "draw" on some of next years holiday allowance, but he only wanted to do this if it was his only option, which unfortunately it's looking like it is his only option. There's a lot to be said for trying to keeping that rainy day fund. I think that the main problem is, that it's hopefully only going to be a relatively short term as such,4-6 weeks. But as you can appreciate, it seems like a long time to him that he not going to have any income coming into his house at all.

It is the only option because as they have said hes not the sick one.

What are his wages like, low?

If his wife has xare or mobility needs that have lasted 3 months and are expected to last another 6 months she may be able to claim disability living allowance but thats a while off now if shes just taken ill.

Are there other family members around who could take a week off work as annual leave?
  • Yup, it's looking like that is his only option, i.e. drawing on next years allowance of holidays. Hes not low paid, but it aint high either. As regards other members of family. he has One daughter who has said that she will help as much as she can, but she has young kids and they are not to keen on them running about when his wife is still recuperating. I just told him that I would ask in here for him to see if he had any other options that the ones already mentioned.
Thanks to all your answers, they are much appreciated.:beer:

She shouldn't need 4-6 weeks care.

Hospital for a week or so....he could probably work during that time. Then a couple of weeks after discharge should see her well on the road to recovery, and certainly able to be left during the day. Perhaps make sure she has a sandwich and a flask of coffee until she feels up to making lunch etc.

I had to work when my husband had his similar surgery. Went back a week after he came home. Admittedly the family helped out at the weekends when I was working.
  • Can't he go on the sick with stress.. after all caring for others is quite stressful at times. hth

I have to agree with Krisskross on this.

My aunt had this surgery when she was about 70. She was a widow and with no family around to help and she was discharged after about 10 days on the hotel wing of the hospital and then she managed on her own with people visiting after work to do shopping and housework.

I'd think that he could get away with about a fortnight off work for when she's discharged.
