None of them are worth a toss. The better ones do nothing at all, the worse ones screw things up.

C'mon Hammyman ya clunkin' fist .. .. .. it's inert / benign but does a worthwhile low level job for rookies who could never ever begin to understand. You've had em, and so have I with 10 or 20 thousand lines of redundant dross entries being read every time. Add to that cookie monsters and other corrupt carp and it's a for~purpose~tool for that group.

Its not an optimiser its just a bog standard safe~as~owses cleaner

BTW I agree the effective ones [ optimisers .. .. not cleaners ] are more dangerous than < insert any claymore waving phrase you like in here >

CCleaner is the only one worth bothering with as it cleans and does no damage .
Registry cleaning will not help speed a computer and from experience the more involved tools can lead to problems and unbootable machine .

Its probably why CCleaner has such a strong following .

Ccleaner's biggest asset is that it gives you more hard disk space. If you're low on hard disk space consider this.
If your computer is just slow, consider a reformat. By far and away the best registry optimiser.

Have to agree with hammy on this they are rather dangerous. Theres also no proven benefits from them. Since the registry contains many hundreds of thousands of keys maybe a lot more, removing 10 to 100 of them isn't going to yield any performance gains. De-fragmenting the registry might make it perform better but you wont notice it.

For the best Registry optimisation tool I'd suggest the following:

Tools you'll need: 1x windows install DVD, copies of your drivers

    Procedure

1.Reformat PC hard drive and reinstall windows from scratch, or factory restore from a partition
2.Reinstall all your drivers and essential programs.
3.Copy over any documents/photos etc you remembered to backup before step 1

    Final most important part
4.Don't repetedly install/uninstall any other junk/bloated software you really don't need that'll screw your PC up over time

Or if you're going to anyway use something like this:http://www.zsoft.dk/index/software_details/4 to get rid of everything.
  • Before you even bring up the subject of a reformat, you should make certain they have the wherewithal to (1) do a full clean install and (2) make sure they have backed up their important stuff at least twice and then (3) be prepared to personally~walk~them~through~it. Even then .. .. many would fail the task as we know from experience.

Suggesting newbies [ yes all sorts of lurkers read and act on these pages ] do a reformat without the above prep is a recipe for disaster, and you know it to be so ! JasX covers most of this.
