My wife is looking at buying a Golf GTI, and I would be interested in peoples views on the options.

1. Dealer, we have seen 1 in stock which she likes and could have in a week. It is the standard car, the only extra being metalic paint. Cost £20,650 with no room for negotiation. They value her car at £17k. If we want a bespoke one, with more extras it will mean around an 8 week wait and more money.

2. 2nd hand, not many around and dealers are charging around £18,500 - £20,000 depending on the spec. Usually around 10,000 miles.

3. Supermarkets, they are charging around £18,000 but the car will probably be an import, the downsides being (maybe) a shorter warranty, not being the 1st registered keeper and obviously the price when we come to sell in years to come. On the upside is the price (cheaper than 2nd hand) and you can get them with more extras and they are in stock, so have a greater choice. Trade in values seem to be similar, which is new fromwhen we bought her last car.

So the cost to change is around £3650 (dealer), £1,500 (2nd hand) and £1,000 (supermarket)

I see no merit in the 2nd hand option and am leaning towards the supermarkets, but would welcome views.
