Exposed stone walls - advice?

We have had to chip off a wall on our stairwell (damp problem under old window which we have remedied) and the sandstone is in quite good condition so we thought it might make a nice feature. It will need repointed and sealed somehow. Anyone done this and can offer any advice or words of caution?

Re point with a lime mortar, use no cement as the mortar should be weaker than the stone. Don't seal it with anything it should breath.
  • We were looking for some kind of breathable 'sealer' that would stop it being dusty?? We have found various products but they seem to be geared for tiles and stone floors. Could a relatively competent DIYer manage the pointing or is that overly ambitious?
