engine failure and car just out of warranty

my father has been told that his car needs a whole new engine which will cost him in the region of £11,000! The warranty has just came to an end.
it is a bmw 320si 2006 model which he bought from new from a bmw authorised dealer.
Surely there is something that can be done, a four year old car (with very very low mileage) should not need a brand new engine!
where does he stand? do we blame the garage or are bmw to be held responsible?
thanks for any responses.

There has not been anything said to what caused it. The car is still in the garage. It is going to cost £1100 for them to take the engine apart. The foregone conclusion is that a new engine is needed.
The car was taken in twice when under warranty - the problem being the engine was shaking when the car was stopped. They have only found it now (it's out of warranty). We will find the full conclusion in a couple of days.0 -
It's good news that there was a problem with the engine when under warranty. Can that problem be linked to the engine failure is the 11k question?0

That would seem to be the case - but let's just see what the garage have to say about it. I can imagine them not wanting to take the blame for it.0 -

Has it been regularly serviced via BMW, following the advised service schedule? What sort of mileage are we talking here?
There is a good case to ask BMW for a contribution towards the costs. Ask your dealer if they will do this for you or contact BMW CS yourself. Might be worth posting your concerns on bmwland.co.uk.0 -
Would the sale of goods act apply here? i.e. the engine is not of sufficient quality, you would expect it to last for much longer than 4 years.0
