is there a sure way to test wall for electrical cables?

    If you are giong to be drilling near a socket or switch - Turn the power off and then take the front off and see where the cables exit the back box. Its not fool proof but if all the cables exit left then its less likely that they will run to the right outside of the box.

    the good thing about drilling water pipes is that its not normally fatal :)
