unable to defrag my computer

Most defrag problems like this are because you have a program running in the background which is accessing the hard disk while you are defragging.
ctrl+aly+del is the best way to do this (as already mentioned).
Also, try removing things that are set to run in the background when Windows starts. Do this by:
. click start
. run
. type msconfig, click ok
. click start-up tab
. either manually remove the ticks, or click disable all.
This will not only help future problems, but you may find an improvement in your system.

The ones to start up include the antivirus, amongst other things. Assuming you leave that to start up and untick most of others, is there a problem in accessing them later from "programmes" or wherever?Torgwen.....................

Yes. If you can identify the importand stuff like anti-virus etc then leave these ticked.

Or remove all, and defrag, then add the ones you want to run back in at a later date.
