Telephone scam

I've just had a phonecall from a man with an Indian accent, claiming to be from the Telephones Preference Service. He said they have been monitoring my line and have recognised a lot of unsolicited phone calls, and proposed putting a block on them -- for a one-off registration fee. TPS is actually free, see

When I pointed this out he hung up. No doubt he knows I have been getting calls because he works for the outfit sending them.
What worries me though is that he knew my address and postcode.

Sounds like a variation on the "your PC has a virus" scam that was mentioned by HMG last week in a report that claimed 25% of household had been contacted. According to the multitude of reports of that scam on here they had name and address info too. Probably the same outfit.
The privacy genie was let out of the bottle some time back when we were all lured by cheap goods off t'internet and popped in our details so the postman could bring them to our door from cyberspace. Stuff gets sold, sites get hacked, or as Forest Gump so correctly noted "!!!! happens"0 -
Persistent blighters 'aint they
Next we will have Father Christmas (with an Indian accent) phoning up asking for a one-off registration fee to deliver our prezzies(I really shouldn't give them ideas!)

Who gave you the two year contract, no doubt some scammy telephone sales pitch was it?
I'll throw in Halloween as well if you take the franchise, (Halloween requires signing your soul over though)0 -
Thanks for bringing this up. I haven't gotten a call like that, though. Hmm..., these scam artists are becoming more sophisticated each time and it's alarming that despite all the reminders from the authorities and reports posted at consumer complaint sites such as CALLERCENTER, there are still a few who become victims to these tricks.0

You have to listen to this for pure entertainment value. http://news.bbc.co.uk/today/hi/today/newsid_9637000/9637033.stm
The indignance at the end of the call that the caller's time has been wasted is just classic!Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!
