Shortfall in National Insurance Contributions

  • If he was receiving IB he should have had his NI credited.

You can't claim State Pension and Carers' Allowance together .

If he reaches retirement age after April 6th he will only need 30 years NI, paid or credited. (Before April 6th, it's 44 for a man).

How many years NI had he paid before he went onto IB?

It might be worth his while seeing a Benefits Advisor at the CAB, who will be able to advise him exactly based on his circumstances.

What happens if you haven't got enough for the state pension and can't afford to make the shortfall up?
  • If your total income is less than £130 if you are single or £198 if you are a couple and you don't have much in the way of savings, it will be made up to these amounts by Pension Credit, which is means-tested.

Thank you, I don't know if I will have paid enough in.

Could someone clarify a point regarding NI Home Responsibility Protection

My partner has 12 qualifying years HRP. She would need a total of 30 qualifying years to maximise state pension. Direct Gov site says that HRP cannot reduce required qualifying years to less than 20. Is this a fixed figure or does the exemption depend on other factors?

I have a question - I just started to get my pension of 87.77 pounds . I worked 3 years from 1965 to 1968 for 2 employers but have heard nothing from one employer and the other says I have no contributions on their records. I have not been given details from pension service about my stamps most were from being a carer. Is there anything I can do?

Hi - just found this thread.
Tried the pension profiler and found I have the full 30yrs - hopefully!

But it says the state pension is £97.65 a week so how come if we receive under £130 as a single person we can get it topped up with pension credits?

The £130 is based on ALL income. So as well as your £97 basic State :Pension, you may, for example, have some SERPS (S2P), and/or an Occupational or Private Pension. These will be totalled up and if your TOTAL income is less than £130 it will be made up to £130 by means-tested Pension Credit.
