This prog makes it very easy to see what is taking up space on your hard drive. http://sourceforge.net/projects/windirstat/

Peak 733480, that's 3/4 of your ram, so you have enough, more will make little difference. security essentials can be quite heavy on ram, so you'd free up more with avast. If it's still going slow, post a hijackthis log

If you need a little bit more disk space, get a usb disk drive, and make another copy to dvd's as backup

  • Perhaps as suggested, an inexpensive external HDD. Even a Terrabyte only costs £50 these days. But it's not just about capacity. If it's just for storage; i.e. just moving and storing your data from the laptop regularly. Then a good quality cheapie will do.

But if you intend to use it as an active drive, for instance working with live video, it would be better to have one with FireWire connection and a large cache. But they can be expensive. So in this case a new and larger internal drive would be a better option.

Reluctant to push you that way though, as I'm not sure if your recovery discs would work with the new internal drive. Would have to check before proceeding.

Move all of your important data to the external drive and then run a Factory Restore. Then come back and we'll help you to uninstall the unnecessary rubbish.

Machine will be back up to speed. You should have a back up option anyway, so the external HDD is a necessity regardless.

Thanks again, I'll put a usb ext drive on my Christmas list. But I'll probably have to buy one myself.
