Buying meat from the market

I went to a local town today and bought 2 small bits of beef for £5, not sure what bits, just a lump which i'm going to cook one for lunch tommorrow.
Anyway, when i told my friend she sounded disgusted coz she reckons there must be something wrong with it t be sold on a market - is she right?
The man said it was m&s beef - what did he mean by this?
Oh and it was in a proper sealed packet just had no stickers on it.

I once visited a market on a coach trip (can't remember which town) that had a butcher selling meat that he said was overstocks from Sainsburys' supplier.

Imho there is nothing wrong with buying meat from the market if you choose the butcher well & it is fresh there is no difference besides price & packaging from supermarket meat.

    Enjoy your beef!

  • A few people would need to be breaking a whole host of regulations to sell food that is unfit for human consumption. Unfortunately, your friend is either being a bit of a snob or doesn't really appreciate what a market is.

There will be nothing wrong with the meat at all. My only disappointment would be in not knowing the cut of the meat, as that's usually the first step in knowing how to cook it.

    Enjoy your beef :)

We have a chap who sells meat at our local friday market (well about 6 stalls). He has a proper refridgerated truck and I think it is from a local butchers. I have always found his meat to be lovely and good value for money. We do have a butchers in the town which I used to use all the time but tbh the last time I went in there it looked dirty so have not been back since.

I buy gammon hams from the market bloke and they are always sealed. I get 2 at the start of the month, cook them, slice them and portion into half pounds, wrap and put in the freezer. Cost me £10 and gave us meat for sandwiches, pizza, hot meals, pasta etc for the whole month. Now the plastic ham you buy is supermarkets would probably worked out costing the same but at least this way I know what my kids are eating.

Tell your mate that if they are that bothered about you buying "disgusting" meat off a market, they can happerly go to the butchers and buy you a nice joint of beef themseleves.

I`ve bought loads of meat off a market butchers van and it`s all been lovely.
Meat markets can be a haven for cheap yet quality meat.

I was at two markets on Saturday. The first one I went to had terrible meat, I was looking for silverside and it was really pale and slimey looking.

I went to the second market and I got a similar size of piece of silverside which was from an organic butchers, really nice and dark and perfect.

I think the general thing for markets is make sure you know what the cut should look like, Some markets traders are truly brilliant, others are not.
